Kaylah Thomas is an indie-pop artist from a small rural town in Australia, blending indie, folk and alternative pop with intimate, diary-like storytelling. More than just a singer-songwriter, Thomas is a storyteller, using vulnerability as both her subject and her strength. Her music explores heartbreak, identity and the moments that shape who we become.

Following her 2023 debut EP Tiny World and 2024 single Letting Go (Of You), Thomas is entering a new era with 22 & Blue, the first glimpse into a new body of work exploring heartbreak, lost friendships, younger selves and the futures that never arrived. Rooted in the messy, nonlinear process of grief, her latest songwriting finds beauty in the space between loss and acceptance.

Equal parts aching and anthemic, 22 & Blue explores the quiet grief of growing up and the emotional turbulence of your early twenties. Written around the birthday that marked the beginning of a relationship’s slow unravelling, the song captures the confusion, heartbreak and identity shifts that come with watching a version of your life change while you are still trying to understand who you are becoming.

Through her latest songwriting, Thomas expands this story beyond heartbreak. Moving through denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance, her music reflects on the many forms of loss that shape us, from people and places to friendships, our past selves and futures that never arrived. Woven throughout her stories are fragmented diary entries and original text-art pieces, creating a world that exists beyond the music itself.

At its heart, this new work is not about simply moving on. It is about learning to live alongside absence, and recognising that grief can be part of becoming someone new. Thomas continues to develop this sound alongside her long-time collaborator and producer, Sam Swain (Josh Cashman, RAT!hammock), with whom she has worked with since 2023.

“This work lives in the space between healing and hurting,” Thomas explains. “It’s about learning that grief isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s just sitting with the version of yourself you thought you’d become.”

Thomas’ journey has taken her from performing to audiences of more than 14,000 as a three-time Principal Vocalist in the Victorian State Schools Spectacular, to earning a Bachelor of Music from the Victorian College of the Arts, where she specialised in Interactive Composition. Her studies expanded her practice through experimentation, storytelling and immersive sound, while her early performance experiences helped shape the live artist she is today.

Since releasing Tiny World in 2023, Thomas has continued to build her place within Melbourne’s independent music scene. The EP introduced audiences to her emotionally charged songwriting, exploring themes of resilience and forgiveness. She later released Letting Go (Of You) in 2024, an atmospheric indie-pop track exploring the aftermath of heartbreak.

Her journey has since continued beyond recorded music, with Thomas performing original work at the sold-out Futuration Showcase at Crown Casino and She Makes Noise Festival in 2026. She is also set to perform at Homegrown Festival in November.
